The second episode
picks up from the dramatic ending of the first episode. Germany stares at the
crate of tomatoes that he has found on the path and then approaches it
cautiously. He taps on the crate with the stick he is still carrying, causing
the crate to jump. Germany jumps back as a high-pitched nervous voice greets
him from within the box.
It tells Germany that it is the "tomato box fairy" who came to be his
friend and to play with him. Germany doesn't buy the lie for one second and
goes to open the box despite the "fairy"'s protests, ripping the lid
off of the crate after some difficulty.
A sobbing young man with reddish-brown hair (Italy) bursts out of the box,
apologizing profusely for lying and begging Germany to not shoot him.
[Opening Sequence]
Italy is still sobbing and making excuses for Germany to not shoot him (i.e.,
he's a virgin and shooting him wouldn't be any fun, he's weak, he has relatives
in Bavaria1 etc.). Germany wonders to himself if this
weak guy's really a descendant of Ancient Rome.
Germany picks Italy up by the back of his battle dress to inspect him. Italy
starts crying hysterically about not being able to eat delicious pasta before
he dies. Germany - looking very disturbed by the flood in front of him - asks
Italy if he is a descendant of Rome.
Italy quiets down and smiles as he says that he is "Grandpa Rome’s”
grandson and is a silly boy who likes pasta and pizza. He's lost all his fear
of Germany and just smiles at him. Germany lets go of Italy and pulls back thinking
that it was a trap to get Germany to let down his guard.
As Italy tells Germany that he wants to be friends, Germany jabs Italy in the
cheek with the butt of his rifle. Italy flails on the ground in pain while
Germany has an internal monologue (while it is written on the side with a
typewriter effect) about how he did not know that the encounter with Italy
would change his destiny so tremendously.
1: Anime footnote:
"I know someone in _________" ; words that Italians always use to
plead for their lives when they're about to get killed. (Example: They would
say "I have relatives who live in Brooklyn!" to an American.) SO what
if you have relatives there?" Italy
falls into this so-called stereotype when he recognizes Germany and immediately
says he has relatives in Germany's neighboring country of Bavaria.
