Liechtenstein sits in her bed late
at night and thinks back to the time that she gave Switzerland pajamas as a
gift. It goes to a flashback that reuses footage from episode 25 where she
gives him the gift: Lichtenstein stops Switzerland in the hallway and holds a
soft blue package in her arms, complete with a darker blue bow. She is wearing
her pink dress and seems a bit tense. She offers the present to Switzerland,
and before he can ask what it is, she presses it frantically to his chest and
tells him that it is a token of her gratitude for everything he has done for
her. She then runs a distance away from him as he thanks her.
Liechtenstein thinks about how
grateful she is and settles down to sleep. As she drifts off, she thinks of how
nothing makes her happier than seeing her brother happy.
A dream sequence follows, providing
a flashback to the end of WWI: A younger Liechtenstein (with her hair in braids;
we learn later that she is wearing a blue dress over a long-sleeved collared
shirt and with a pink ribbon around it) wanders a rainy street on a dark night.
She collapses against the wall of an alley next to a dumpster, reflecting on
how everything around her is in ruin and how there isn't even enough for her to
eat. She gazes up into the rainy sky wonders what will happen to her. She closes
her eyes after a moment and rests limply against the wall, realizing that it
may be the end for her (though she wishes she could have stayed a country
longer).
A man in street clothes and wearing
a cap appears in the alleyway and spots Liechtenstein. He asks her if she is all
right. Liechtenstein slowly opens her eyes to see Switzerland looking at her
with concern. The camera takes her point of view, its focus on Switzerland
sometimes blurring before snapping back into focus. Liechtenstein narrates that
the man was her “big brother.” The scene
fades out as the camera pans back from the touching scene.
The flashback then jumps to a scene
when Switzerland takes Liechtenstein into his home. Switzerland asks Liechtenstein
if the food is good and an ecstatic Liechtenstein replies that the piece of
bread that she is eating is very good. Liechtenstein narrates in a voiceover
that Switzerland has taken good care of her since the day they met. The camera
pans back, and one can notice how Switzerland’s dirty shirt is patched up in
the back. Liechtenstein asks Switzerland if he is going to eat as well when she
notices that he hasn’t touched any food. He answers that he already ate.
Liechtenstein and Switzerland are
then seen hanging sheets out to dry on a clothesline. Switzerland asks Liechtenstein
(who is off screen) if she is feeling better. Liechtenstein stands from picking
up a basket of laundry and tells Switzerland that she is doing much better. A
close-up scene of Liechtenstein gazing at the camera as the breeze runs through
her hair appears, and she narrates that she later learned that Switzerland
saved her in a time when he didn’t have enough to go around either. The camera switches
so that we can see that Liechtenstein is standing in a field outside of a town.
The scene fades to white.
